>> well, i sort of it. >> okay. >> thank you, uncle wisdom. >> happy birthday. >> do we have cake? >> no. >> gifts? >> gifts, yes. thankfully, no parties. those days are over until 16. >> here is your satellite- radar. we are doing better. we are not quite where we want to be yet. we should see more sunshine today along with mild temperatures. expecting highs in the mid- to upper 50s. there could be a shower or a sprinkle. see what is happening out in west virginia. we've got a couple of light sprinkles there into west virginia, eastern kentucky. that is the actual cold front. that will get through here later this morning. i don't think we'll see any measurable rain but i can't completely promise you we won't see a light sprinkle or shower as that passes through. breezes are going to pick up behind that front and our wind are going to gust to 20, maybe 30 miles per hour later today. here is your temperature. 50degrees at reagan national. that is what you call mild for mid december. 4 out at dulles. 50 at bwi marshall.

forecast high temperatures today in the upper 50s. how about 58 here in the city. and the temperatures will be falling a little later today. in the 40s you see north and west, those temperatures will be later today as temperatures start to fall as our cold front moves through. >> thank you so much. new this morning, we have a traffic alert to pass along to you. your commute to work today could be a little shorter. that is because four roads in the district now have increased speed limits. this is a live look along new york avenue in northeast d.c. one of the roads affected by the change here. here are the roads with the faster speed limits. the move comes after d-d.o.t. completed its review of the roads and found a higher speed would not impact safety in these areas. >> time now to check in with julie wright and see what is happening on the morning commute. >> good morning. anxious to see how this plays out for those traveling along new york avenue this morning. typically, a very heavy traveled area as you work your

way between south dakota avenue and bladensburg road and coming outbound headed back over towards bw parkway. we are anxious to see how this is going to pan out for you. this is kenilworth avenue at eastern. no problems to report traveling through northeast headed out towards pennsylvania avenue. pulling up this camera again because this is what we're waking up to in germantown actually lot of fog out hereon the roads this morning. traveling south out of 270 or north headed up into frederick, allow some extra time out on the roads. be careful. 'tis the season. a lot of deer out there so slow it down. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. this morning, the newtown, connecticut community prepares for lay another victim of friday's tragic shooting to rest. services for six-year-old jessica rekos will be held today. >> all schools in the district except for sandy hook elementary will also reopen this morning. fox's nicole collin is live in

newtown now with the latest. >> good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the first funerals for sandy hook shooting victims were packed and extremely emotional as would be expected. there are several more funerals planned through outthe week, at least one a day until friday. t another heart-breaking funeral today as six-year-old jessica rekos is laid to rest. her family says she loved horses and they had promised her one of her own but that dream will never come true just like the dreams of 19 other children whose lives were cut short. those who attend funeral services monday for jessica's first grade classmates noah pozner and jack pinto are reeling. >> it was the saddest thing i have ever even and hope the saddest thing i ever see? my life. >> reporter: investigators have yet to discover a motive for friday's rampage when adam

lanza killed 27 people including his mother. >> we are going to do everything that it takes to ensure that we uncover every bit of evidence, conduct as many interviews with everyone that we need to do to paint a clear picture as to exactly how and why this tragedy occurred. >> reporter: a friend of lanza's mother says she was looking for ways to connect with the boy who reportedly had asperger's syndrome. >> she was taking him to the gun range as a way that a single mom could try to bond with her son. that is why she -- he enjoyed it and that is why she did it. >> reporter: we have avenue also learned 6-year-old james mattioli will also be buried today. he was described as kind and energetic. we have an update on breaking news out of prince george's county where police are still on the scene of a

barricade. police say the incident started about 10:30 last night. u.s. marshals arrived at an apartment to serve a warrant in the 1800 block of greenwich woods drive in adelphi. oneperson is still inside the home right now and is believed to be arm the. we will continue to bring you updates as they become available. also in prince george's county, the hunt is for a group of men would broke into i home and shot a person inside. this happened just before 2:30 this morning in oxon hill. the victim says the suspects burst into the home demanding cash and jewelry. the victim was taken to the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. there are positive signs on a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. speaker of the house john boehner was back at the white house last night for his second meeting in last week and there is talk about a new deal between the president and speaker boehner. staffers are not saying what they discussed but senate leadership is telling members to be ready to return to work starting next week.

they could take up boehner's proposal from friday when he offered a tax increase on incomes over a million dollars. a news alert now in the district where police are searching for a killer. a man was found dead in an apartment on i street northeast. no word on how he died. police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. 53-year-old james caroline has been indicted on a capital murder and weapons charge in the murder of an arlington county julie store owner over the summer. tommy wong was found shot to death behind the counter of capital jewelers on columbia pike in july. caroline was arrested five days later. he is due back in court thursday when a trial date will be set. care line is also suspected of robbing a d.c. jewelry store in june. no one was hurt in that robbery. cans of stew packing more

a virginia firefighter is recovering after he was injured responding to an apparent explosion at a shopping center t happened at the ann briar shopping center in amherst. witnesses say they if he would two explosions before seeing flames shoot into the sky. another drug bust at dulles airport. authorities caught a guatemalan man trying to bring cocaine into the united states from el salvador. police say the man hid about four pounds of cocaine inside jars filled with stew. right now, no criminal charges have been filed. the man is seeking asylum. this is the seventh drug bust at dulles in the past year. the nurse caught in the middle of that royal hoax phone call has been laid to rest. she hanged herself days after two australian dj res prank called the hospital to get information on kate middleton's medical condition. her funeral was held yesterday in southern india.

dumber, we still got a chance. might be one in a million but still got a chance. it doesn't look like the pattern will get cold are and stormier here to end the month. we have a couple of chances for winter weather if you like it. 55 in fredericksburg. 46 up in frederick. off to the north and west, temperatures in the 40s. but you can see lots of 50s. this is very unusual. our average daytime highs this time of year in the mid- to upper 40s. winds, they've started to pick up and this is actually good news because this is mixing the atmosphere and getting rid of that fog. currently out of the west at five miles per hour. but they are really going to pick up as we get the passage of this cold front later today. get ready for a breezy day. winds will be blowing, 15, 20 and gusting to 30 later this afternoon. satellite-radar, noise and quiet. not expecting any measurable rain out there this morning. i don't think we'll get much of anything today at all although i can't promise we went get a sprinkle or shower with the passage of a cold front that will come through later this

morning that. will give give us a deck of clouds. wind will start to pick up as i mentioned a little later today. here is another look at t the front gets on through here later this morning. we clear it out and high pressure builds in for a couple of beautiful days around here. tomorrow looks fantastic. sunshine, highs back in the low 50s and as is typical this time of year, pattern moving very quickly, we'll get more chains by thursday. 5 # today, becoming partly sunny. shower possible with the passage of the front. i can guarantee you all of us get the breezes. winds gusting 25 to maybe 30. clear skies, much cereal tonight. the temperatures will fall back into the low to mid-30s across the region. -- much cooler tonight. plenty of sunshine tomorrow. gorgeous day, highs in the mid- 50s. showers arrive thursday, thursday night and early friday. that cold front means business and you can see it with the high temperatures by friday and saturday only in the low 40s. let's do some traffic and get the latest from julie wright who finished her christmas shopping in july.

>> now, i'm just shopping for me. all right. allison is like yeah. outer loop of the beltway as well as the inner loop here at the american legion bridge. waking up to morning to some foggo allow extra time on the roads. no issues reported between tice and and the exits for 270. lanes are open each way on the top stretch of the beltway between college park and bethesda. light traffic volume on 95 and 295 coming in out of laurel. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. >> thank you. d.c. congresswoman eleanor holmes norton is fighting for the district's respect. she is pushing for a provision to the 2013 defense authorization bill. it would require the armed forces to display d.c.'s flags and the flags of the five territories whenever the flag of the 50 states are displayed. the congresswoman says that she never wants anyone in the military to feel singled out after serving for their nation. congress woman says, as american citizens, we should

expect no less since we are a part of the american family. and all of our flags should be recognized. in d.c. politics, there is no time to waste when it comes to campaign finance reform. that is according to councilmember mary cheh. she is trying to push through emergency legislation to help prevent campaign fraud. but as matt ackland explains, the council chairwoman is not fully on board. >> reporter: after a year of campaign investigations which included questions about big money orders, it surprised many when the head of the d.c. council said campaign finance reform was dead for 2012. some found it upsetting. >> first of all, i was deeply disappointed that we didn't move campaign finance in general. >> reporter: councilmember mary cheh is not taking no for an answer. tuesday, she will introduce an emergency bill that limits money orders which are very hard to trace to $25 or less. same as cash.

>> it is not as if this is speculation. we have seen thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars being in effect laundered through money orders so we have to stop it. >> reporter: earlier this year, federal investigators started looking at money orders given to many local campaigns by fundraiser jeffy thompson. councilmember vincent original showed us this list of money orders given to his campaign. he called them suspicious. steak a look. thousands of dollars donated through money orders taken out one after the other. >> my own view is that i think that the restriction on money orders of $25 is unreasonable. >> reporter: counsel sell man phil mendelsohn threw cold water on the proposal. he questioned if cheh's bill will stop fraud. >> the fact is that the abuses that occurred in 2010 that we know about are abuses that were illegal. so passing a law isn't going to

change that because they're already illegal. >> reporter: matt ackland, fox 5 news. hawaii senator daniel inouye has passed wai. he died from respiratory complication. his wife and son were by his side at the walter reed national military medical center. he was a public servant for merely 08 years running for the senate in 1962 and serving for nine consecutive terms, eight deakdz. tim scott is being appointed to fill the seat of retiring senator jim demint. -- eight decades. demint announced earlier this month he would be stepping down to become the presses of the conservative think tank, the heritage foundation. just in time for the

welcome back, everybody. a server at a northern virginia restaurant working on her college degree got quite a surprise. >> fox 5's beth parker tells us how a little holiday cheer is helping out this holiday season. season. >> reporter: they came, they ate, they tip bombed. what is a tip bomb? it is a surprisingly huge tip for a waiter or waitress. >> i was shocked. >> reporter: and he wasn't even the recipient. lonnie is the head coach here at glory days restaurant and sports bar on nutley street in fairfax. he will be the first to tell that you servers earn their

money. >> they work very hard on their feet 10, 11, 1 hours a day. >> reporter: watch some third joe taken during lunch this friday. >> unknown to us. they didn't tell anybody. they didn't talk to anybody. they went above and beyond and did this super gracious thing. railroad we tracked down a member of the group. they wanted to remain anonymous but it is all captured on vid grow. the total bill is $# 08. the stipulate a whopping $903. >> the server had an initial reaction that this was a mistake made. >> reporter: the group quickly scooted out the door but later the server did get a chance to talk to them on the phone. the tip bombers chose the restaurant but they didn't necessarily select this waitress. they just happened to be seated at this table in her section. >> a very long-term employee and you dente don't see that in restaurants a lot but somebody who has worked here for a long time. i know they are a college student as well. i'm sure that will help with something somewhere down the line. >> reporter: the group does

chicago, 32. notice those numbers because that cooler air will arrive later this afternoon and tonight and we will cool off overnight tonight and about 24 hours from now, our temperatures will be back in the 30s. as the winds pick up ahead of our front and late front, we should lose the fog here shortly. out to the west, out into eastern kentucky and west virginia, the light green is our cold front that will come through later this morning. we'll cloud fine period around the middle of the day with a possibility of a light sprinkle or shower. -- we'll cloud up for a period around the middle of the day with a possibility of a light sprinkle or shower. i don't think we'll get a lot of measurable rain today. you might see a sprinkle. you will notice warm temperatures and winds pick up later this afternoon.

today. also today, funeral services for six-year-old jessica rekos will be held. police say 20-year-old adam lands' mother was shot four times in the head while she was sleeping. police are looking into lanza's personal compute fore a possible motive. a friend. the suspected gunman's mother says the public doesn't understand how hard she tried to help her son adam. butch collins says nancy was a gun collector and thought that she could help her son by teaching him how to shoot. >> she was trying to bond, find ways to bond with him and she told me the guns, she would take them shooting because that was a way that a single mom could relate to her son. so she would take him out shooting. juror collins says he used to meet nancy lanza ate local pub and talk about their problems

we have breaking news from overseas to report. the president of iraq was hospitalized this morning. at first, this was no reason given. but now we are given reports that he had a stroke. doctors are trying to stabilize him but have not decided if he should be flown to another country for treatment. police in china detained more than 100 people for

ahead of our front which will be moving in later this morning. get ready for a nice mild day. we've lost the fog or are losing the fog as we speak. here your mild temperature to start the day. not hard to get into the upper 50s when you are starting your day at 50 degrees. check out annapolis, 54 degrees this morning. fredericksburg, 55. that is amazing stuff for the middle andened of december here. then you get north and west and we're looking at upper 40s. 48 in gaithersburg and baltimore. obviously, these temperatures well above normal for this time of year and today, we'll be enjoying another mild afternoon. no rain to speak of. no precipitation out there at the moment. should be a nice dry start for the day. can't guarantee you won't get a light sprinkle or shower today. reason why, we've got a cold front out to the west. and if this comes through be a couple of thins are going to happen. we'll get a little deck. clouds moving through late morning or early afternoon. there could be a shower or
